Insurer Liaising

There are many agents in the Self-Insurance, Income Protection, Permanent Disability and WorkCover Insurance who administer claims.  In managing these various claims; the claims assessors or case managers will gather medical and other information in order to determine whether they will accept liability for the claim.  If liability is accepted, insurers will authorise or oversee a provision of reasonably necessary treatment. They may refer the ill or injured individual to approved workplace rehabilitation providers and may request the involvement of an Injury Management Consultant (IMC) to mediate and negotiate the return-to-work opportunities in keeping with the ill or injured individual’s capacity to work.  They also may request the assessment from an injury management examiner (a specialist versed in the field of the medical injury) to ascertain the diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.  IMC Medical assists in promoting injury management strategies, rehabilitation processes and providing advice to the Insurer to assist in achieving health" and return-to-work capacity for their clients.

Case Conferencing

A case conference may be requested by the insurer, employer, or rehabilitation provider to discuss with the Nominated Treating Doctor return-to-work opportunities in relation to the ill or injured individual's capacity to work.  The case conference can be an excellent tool to facilitate all parties requirements and sitting down and negotiating a transparent rehabilitation process so that everybody is of the understanding of the requirements involved and the process going forward.  The case conference is an ideal tool to try and establish working opportunities between all parties.

Rehabilitation Guidelines

Rehabilitation is a treatment or treatments designed to facilitate the process of recovery from injury, illness or disease to as normal a condition as possible.  The purpose of rehabilitation is to restore some or all of the patient’s physical, sensory and mental capabilities that were lost due to injury, illness or disease.  Rehabilitation includes assisting the patient to compensate for deficits that cannot be reversed medically.  Rehabilitation addresses the patient’s physical, psychological and environmental needs.  It is to assist restoring the patient’s physical functions in both the physical, social and avocational environments.  Rehabilitation is usually a team effort with various parties, medical and paramedical to assist the injured person to achieve optimal positive outcomes and best capacity for return to well-being going forward both in the physical, social, avocational and world of work.

Mediation and Negotiating Return to Work Opportunities

The Injury/Illness Management Consultant (IMC) can evaluate the medical and physical capacity of the injured or ill individual, review all the medical treatments, correspondence, rehabilitation entities and all activities related to the rehabilitation plan.  With this information the IMC can ascertain the injured or ill individual's readiness for work in regard to timeframes and appropriate medical restrictions and management options.  The IMC can review the progress and assist in upgrading the return-to-work plan.  This may involve contacting the employer to assist with identifying suitable duties for upgrades.  This may include providing advice on the Self-Insurance policies or workers compensation system and what inputs delay the return-to-work can have on financial status and rehabilitation process.  The IMC can liaise with the Nominated Treating Doctor to discuss medical options and capacity in relation to the duties available with the employer.  Through liaising and discussing capacity and ability with the Nominated Treating Doctor, the insurers, the employers, rehabilitation providers and all other parties involved in the individual’s rehabilitation process, the IMC attempts to mediate a solution through discussions with every party as required.
