IMC is designed to ascertain an individual’s health and level of fitness for a specific job. These examinations or file reviews require in-depth consultations and examination of the individual, a thorough understanding of the requirements of their position and detailed knowledge about their medical condition.
An Injury / Illness Management Consultant is a registered medical practitioner who assists in the return to work process when differences arise between a Nominated Treating Doctor (NTD), the employer and/or the insurer.
An insurer or employer makes a referral to an IMC to assess the nature of the problem and attempt to mediate a solution through discussions with the various Treatment Providers or WorkCover related parties.
Injury/ Illness Management Consultants are approved by WorkCover NSW.
An Injury/ Illness Management Consultant may assist by:
Discussing the individual’s readiness for work in regards to timeframes and appropriate medical restrictions and management options.
Reviewing progress and upgrading of the return to work plan.
Identifying suitable duties and upgrades.
Providing advice on the Self - Insurance Policies or Workers compensation system and discussing how inputs or delays in return to work can have on an individual’s financial status.
Reviewing work capacity assessments. The individuals work capacity assessment will take into account a range of factors including medical evidence, vocational retraining, and the number of hours a person is able to work. Work capacity assessments can be reviewed at specified points throughout the life of their claim.
Discussing return to work obligations. Injured / ill workers and their employers need to work together to ensure the best possible return-to-work results. The IMC can assist in helping the individual to understand that if they have the capacity to work; in co-operation with the NTD, specialist, employer or insurer, to make reasonable efforts to return to work in suitable employment, and may request their employer to provide such suitable employment.
Discussions with the employer regarding duties available for return to work
